Everyone knows it's coming.
We've been preparing for a long time. We've made
movies, told stories, and even immersed
ourselves in the impending culture of it doing
such banal, everyday things as going for walks
or playing kickball. Even the Center for Disease
Control has started advertising the guidelines
for its new and improved survival kits.
Personally, I have a pair of machetes mounted to
the walls of my living room and a basement
stockpiled with bottled water and canned goods
for the day it happens. I've even started
learning how to dowse for water and preserve my
own food in case it gets really bad because,
hey, I like to be prepared for what I see on the
horizon. And what do I see coming our way?
That's right. You guessed it.
The Zombie Apocalypse.
One day soon–perhaps even sooner than any of us
imagine–the dead will rise. They will claw their
way out of their graves and sate themselves on
the supple flesh of the terrified masses. Those
bitten will fall and rise again, cursed with an
undeniable hunger for the meaty organs of the
living. They will defy thousands of years of
human evolution, or perhaps create the pinnacle
of that evolution, as they devour raw meat like
undead cannibals, and bodies will litter the
streets.
Drawn to our scent like mosquitoes to the warm
blood that pumps beneath our skin, they will
find us boarded up in our houses, barricaded in
our high schools, hiding in our windowless
basements, isolated in our attics, and hiding
out in our cabins in the woods, and they will
eat us. They will find us and drive us into the
open where they will devour us. They will find
us. . . delicious.
The best we can hope for is to delay the
inevitable bite with careful preparation and an
army of knowledge to fend off the onslaught of
the walking dead. So we read as much as we can.
We learn about the different breeds of undead.
We prepare ourselves to wake from the coma of
ignorance by devouring the words we glean from
storytellers, those that have lifted the veil to
peer at the underbelly of the Underworld. We
imagine the hellish world that will be left to
the survivors and hope that we will be among
them.
Gather your cache of melee weapons. Round up
your survival gear. Kiss your children good
night.
Because they are coming.
They’ve been dead a long time. And they’re
hungry.
So very hungry.
